What Day and Time of Day Should You Twitter?

Twitter is loud, Twitter is quiet
Depending on what time of day and on what day you use Twitter, it can be absolutely silent or it can be tremendously loud. According to Hubspot, Thursday late in the evenings is the most active time on Twitter and the least active time is super early on Saturday mornings.
Does this mean that you should launch a product at 10:00pm on a Thursday night? Probably not- it’s too loud. Should you roll out a press release at 5:00am on a Saturday? Probably not- it’s too quiet.
So where is the sweet spot?
There’s got to be a magic key, right? The answer is no- these averages are for the entire nation and we all know that geography changes culture. Although Austin is in the Top 10 Most Heavily Populated Cities of Twitter Users, there is still no magic sweet spot. Why? Because a sweet spot is absolutely subjective. More eyes doesn’t necessarily mean more traction.
Let’s say you’re rolling out a new iPhone application and plan to announce it through social media and need the technology and journalist scenes to pay attention, you’ll want to leak it before lunch mid-week to allow the swell to build. If you’re online trying to connect one-on-one if you’re still in the audience building phase, evenings are good because it’s typically a more social hour environment. Depending on what you’re trying to do, consider the tone of those around you- if everyone’s lamenting the Iran elections, it’s not the time to be Mr. Sham Wow about your product, you should join in and see how you can help. If everyone in the public timeline of Twitter is discussing their favorite restaurants, it’s a social time and you can connect in a more silly manner. If the masses are talking about the tech conference in town, you can join in adding value from your company perspective if it matches the conversation.
How to be a winner
Be natural and pay attention to those around you and don’t overthink it. Behave as you would at a coffeehouse full of your friends and be appropriate with your tone and you’ll be a hit!

@tyr said “not sure I buy the “too loud”… If you’re trying to get buzz would think activity would lead to more activity”
It seems as if that would be true, but in peak times, if you don’t directly address me (either via an @ symbol with my name or a direct message), the chances are slim that I’ll see what you’re saying because I follow enough people on Twitter that messages are easily lost and I am barely able to keep up with those addressing me directly rather than addressing the masses. Thoughts?
