Umm, that’s not an insult…

People using online tools are occasionally mocked by those scared of technology, “oh you’re on Twitter? What a geek!” But what they don’t understand is that I don’t take ‘geek’ as an insult- my parents, coworkers and Obama are geeks then too for using technology. But someone recently used the word ‘nerd’ which raised my eyebrows a little bit…

Our daughter asked us the difference between a geek and a nerd and we told her that a geek carries a laptop and a nerd carries a beaker. She then declared herself as a geek. The point is that both are smart and in today’s pop culture, it is chic to be smart (although I’m not sure if slim or thick is in right now nor am I sure if wine is healthy or not in today’s news).

OOOOH, an experiment!

This week, we’re doing a little experiment that we want you to check back next week for… we’re doing a comparison between Austin nerds and Austin geeks. Thursday at 7pm at Opal Divine’s downtown, the first Nerd Nite in Austin will be held and proclaims to attract people that love the obscure (does my Family Guy or LOLCat knowledge count?). Then, Saturday morning from 10am-noon, Geek Austin is hosting coffee at Blu Cafe on 3rd and Nueces.

So, join us in both as we photograph and mingle with Austin geeks and nerds and report back the differences. Although both are “in” right now, who do YOU think will be cooler- nerds or geeks?

    I’m just excited to give it a shot- I have already unleashed my inner geek but maybe I have an inner nerd too? I’ll let you know and MAYBE from pics of both you’ll pick which YOU are :)

    Both events looked appealing but I don’t think I can go to either because of other plans.
    Interesting to see how the first Nerd Nite goes…..
